Dr Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission declared a state of emergency on Tuesday amid escalating violent extremism and terror, military coups d’etat, banditry, and political instability in the sub-region. Touray declared this during the 55th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at the Ministerial level in Abuja. He said the events of the last few weeks had shown the imperative of serious introspection on the future of democracy and the urgent need to invest in the sub-region’s security. President Bola Tinubu has nominated the immediate past Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as a non-career ambassador. The President also named Ita Enang, a former senator; Chioma Ohakim, former Imo State first lady; and Abdulrahman Dambazau, former minister of interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff, as non-career ambassadors. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has petitioned the Senate to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje. The petition, submitted on Wednesday 3rd  during plenary on behalf of Inibehe Effiong Chambers, alleges attempts by some individuals to shield those responsible from accountability. Ochanya, a student of the Federal Government Girls College, Gboko, died on October 17, 2018, following complications linked to prolonged sexual abuse.
