Bello Turji, a well-known bandit leader, has accused two former northern governors of fostering insecurity throughout the nation, particularly in the North. He also said that he was a part of a series of peace meetings with the Zamfara State government when the state was under the control of a former governor. However, he vehemently denied that he was given N30 million or any other substantial incentive to take part in the process. Efforts made to get the reaction of both former governors at press time yesterday proved abortive as they neither picked up calls nor returned the calls.
However, several close associates of the former governors insisted that a terrorist's words should not be believed. “Why would anyone want to place a premium on the words of a terrorist?” asks one of the sources. Is it not clear that the terrorist is just trying to present himself as a victim? It is all lies.”
Another source close to one of the governors volunteered: “I can confirm to you that Turji is telling lies. Somebody who has serially killed is the one you want to believe. All that he has said is lies.”
Additionally, neither the Federation's Ministry of Justice nor the Federation's Office of the Attorney-General offered a response to the development. In a video that went viral yesterday, Turji, on the other hand, said that previous political leaders in Zamfara and Sokoto states were to blame for the long-standing insecurity in the region. He claimed that previous administrations had armed vigilante groups known as "Yan Banga," which, according to him, disproportionately targeted Fulani communities and escalated violence.
